St Piers School is a non-maintained special school supporting children and young people aged 4–19 with neurological conditions such as epilepsy, autism, and complex needs.

While day places are available, it is the residential provision, which caters for students aged 12-19, that has recently been commended, and forms part of an integrated and holistic approach to education and care, ensuring every student is prepared for independent living while enjoying a safe and enriching environment.

The Ofsted report praised St Piers for providing highly effective care that not only exceeds standards but also contributes to significantly improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people.

Central to this success is the innovative ‘waking day curriculum’ which extends learning and life skills well beyond classroom hours by ensuring a seamless collaboration between care, education, therapy, and health teams. Such an integrated approach creates an environment where each child’s unique needs are met and where they are empowered to thrive.

The residential services at St Piers School are designed to be flexible and nurturing. Students benefit from safe, vibrant, and inclusive settings that not only offer warm and welcoming accommodation but also foster social skills and independence.

Carolyn Meakings, Head of St Piers Residential Services, said: “We are thrilled with this recognition from Ofsted. The ‘outstanding’ rating is a testament to the passion, professionalism, and commitment of our team. Our residential students form an essential part of our school community. We continuously strive to ensure their experience enhances their learning, independence, and overall well-being.”

In addition to commendable safeguarding processes and a deep understanding of individual student needs, the report highlighted the effectiveness of therapeutically informed strategies and the positive culture of student voice and empowerment.
