Little hands, green thumbs: Reigate Holmesdale Road Nursery and Wray Common Care Home dig into intergenerational fun

Last week for world earth day, children from Bright Horizons Reigate Holmesdale Day Nursery and Preschool paid a special visit to Wray Common Nursing and Residential Home, marking the occasion with a joyful intergenerational gardening activity rooted in connection and community.

In a morning full of smiles and muddy hands, the children joined care home residents to plant sunflower and runner bean seeds. This activity not only supported the themes of Earth Day but also reflected Bright Horizons’ Nurture Approach - a commitment to creating meaningful experiences that foster emotional wellbeing, positive relationships, and a lifelong love of learning.

Jean, Activities Coordinator at Wray Common, reflected on the importance of such moments for the residents:

It was such a joyful and heartwarming experience for our residents to spend time with the children from Bright Horizons Reigate Holmesdale Nursery. I can say that experiences like this are incredibly meaningful for our residents. Intergenerational activities, such as planting seedlings with the children, offer powerful opportunities for sensory stimulation, reminiscence, and purposeful occupation - all of which support emotional wellbeing, identity, and social inclusion.”

Jessica, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Reigate Holmesdale Day Nursery, reflected on the visit and the on-going relationship with Wray Common:

It is such an exciting time for the children when it’s ‘visit the care home day’. This time they wanted to complete some planting with the residents, which links in with their interests currently. The care home provided pots, soil, seeds and labels, and they planted sunflowers and runner beans. Being part of the community link with the nursery and care home and seeing the interactions between each other is such a lovely and wholesome time.”

With moments like these, Bright Horizons continues to nurture a love for the natural world while strengthening community ties. This makes a fitting celebration of Earth Day and everything it stands for.
