In the lead-up to the event, the children created handmade bunting and a large commemorative flag to decorate the garden space, ready for a festive afternoon.
The celebration was brought to life with the guest appearance of Mark Sullivan, Messenger Sergeant Major of the King’s Guard of the Yeoman of the Guard, who added ceremonial flair to the occasion.
The afternoon began with curiosity and gentle introductions which soon transformed into a joyful afternoon of shared stories, laughter, and songs. War-time music played in the background as children and visitors sat together to enjoy a traditional ‘old-time’ tea, complete with cucumber sandwiches, jam sponge, and fruit salad, with evaporated milk offered just for the grown-ups.
The event was a heart-warming example of Bright Horizons’ commitment to building connections across generations, and both the nursery and residential home have agreed to plan more visits in the future.
Veronica, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Hinchley Wood, reflected on the visit: “Today, we shared stories and songs with the heroes of yesterday. Celebrating VE Day with our local elderly residents reminded us that the spirit of resilience, community, and gratitude lives on through the memories that we shared!"
