I am of course referring to Audrey Turnbull. Audrey you will be sorely missed, not just by your blood family but by the Crawley Town family as well.
Yesterday, I’m writing this on Sunday morning at 9am, or is it 10am, after a night of celebration with fellow Red Devil Bill Webber and his wife Jane, who were celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary in Redz, Crawley showed they are up for the fight by demolishing Rotherham 4-0. We did talk about football, and I was overjoyed, upon leaving for home, when the team coach rolled into the stadium car park, and I was able to congratulate some of the players and management on a wonderful result.
To win against Bristol Rovers last Tuesday in Scott’s first match in charge was vitally important but even I did not expect us to go to the New York stadium just four days later and demolish Steve Evans’ Rotherham as completely as we did. Kamari Doyle is proving invaluable in our fight to maintain our League One status; his two goals being struck with deadly accuracy before Gavin Holahan and Panutche Camara wrapped the result up in the last few minutes. How Brighton must have wished for just one of his goals as they succumbed in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest.
To make our result even more valuable, there were no other winners in the bottom ten clubs, with only Northampton Town, Cambridge United and Wigan Athletic picking up single points. There is a full fixture list, or should I say there was a full fixture list on Tuesday, April 1 which will have seen Burton at home to inform Layton Orient, Cambridge at home to Wrexham, the Red Devils trying to win three in a row for the first time this season at home to the Posh, whilst the Shrews visited Wycombe Wanderers.
If the results of those matches have all gone our way we will still be in the relegation places, but in 21st place and looking up at the four or five teams just above us and with two of them, Northampton and Exeter City, still to visit the Broadfield.
The gap on Mothers Day between us and safety was down to just six points, hopefully by 10pm on Tuesday that could have been whittled down to just three points and the Great escape could really be on. One thing for sure is that if we fail in our efforts to escape, at least we will have gone down fighting till the end.
I am a season ticket holder so will be at the remaining four home games standing in Torres Corner with my family and friends and I will also be at Stevenage next Saturday, Birmingham on Good Friday and Shrewsbury on the last day of the season. I urge all of you who love Crawley Town to attend as many of these games as you can to cheer on the lads to what could be a wonderful end to the season.
Mick Fox and I are staging an exhibition at Crawley Museum between Thursday 17th July and Saturday 16th August, which is tentatively titled “Great Escape 1,2 and 3?” and will tell the story of the last two- and a-bit seasons. We would particularly like to include fans pictures so please see me or Mick Fox if you can help.
