Political opinion with Tom Rutland MP: Resetting our relationship with the EU

The Prime Minister has struck a historic deal with the European Union after months of extensive negotiations.

Tom Rutland MP for East Worthing and Shoreham at Holmbush Primary Academy.

In our manifesto, we promised to improve our trade relationship with the EU. This new deal delivers this: ensuring more jobs, cheaper bills and secure borders.

The Conservatives’ Brexit deal significantly harmed our fishing industry due to unnecessary red tape, but our deal rips this up, giving our fishers stability and certainty. £360 million will also be invested in Britain’s fishing industry, significantly supporting our coastal community.

In Parliament, I was delighted to welcome pupils from Sir Robert Woodard Academy and answer their insightful questions about my role as your MP.

As ever, it was a busy week in the constituency.

I joined volunteers from East Worthing’s Muscle Beach Swimmers Club, who have been campaigning for improved water quality, to collect a sample of seawater for testing. These results will provide independent data, enabling us to effectively monitor Southern Water’s performance.

On Friday, I joined the children making use of Holmbush Primary Academy’s new free breakfast club in Shoreham, funded by the Labour Government, providing nutritious food to pupils and childcare for parents.

It was lovely to see Apron Community Farm in Lancing in person, before meeting with Andy’s Angels, a local charity supporting grieving children and adults.

I then headed over to Shoreham to visit Chapter 34 bookstore and Boots Pharmacy to talk about how the government can support our local high street.

Over the weekend, local members and I knocked on residents' doors in Shoreham to chat about local issues and hear what I can help them with.
