During the visit, the Heworth Grange students explored the interesting world of chemistry through a series of engaging and hands-on activities.

They took part in a practical workshop, where they worked with specialist laboratory equipment to investigate and synthesise aspirin.

Under the guidance of experienced university staff, the Year 10s learned about key laboratory procedures, such as titration, how to safely handle chemicals and how to dispose of waste.

The University of Sunderland was hosting this year’s  Salters’ Festival of Chemistryfor the North East, which aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among 14 to 16 year olds.

The initiative hopes to encourage teenagers to “discover” chemistry and see it as a pathway to many careers.

Andrea Ladha, Head of Science at Heworth Grange School, said: “We had a fantastic day at the University of Sunderland and would like to thank the university and the Salters' Institute for making this visit possible.

“The day not only enhanced our students’ scientific understanding, but also gave them experience of life on a university campus.

“Inspired by this experience, we hope many of these young people will consider pursuing science studies at a higher level in the future.”
