Popular Newcastle-based fashion retailer announces closure

Vintage fashion retailer Garms, located just metres from Grey’s Monument in the heart of Newcastle, announced on Wednesday evening that it will be closing its doors as of April 27.

Garms, since its launch just over two years ago, has earned a strong reputation among Newcastle's student community for offering quality, on-trend clothing at reasonable prices. This, along with frequent student offers, quickly helped the retailer establish itself and become a staple of youth fashion in the city.

The vintage clothing retailer also welcomed a few high-profile guests through its doors, with one of the most notable visitors being Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

A student, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her thoughts on the closure, saying: "I remember Garms as a fresher when they used to announce a sale and queues would form all the way up to Grey’s Monument. It was a place where you’d find old football shirts at one end and something limited edition from the ’90s at the other. It was somewhere you’d visit at least once a week. It’s such a shame to hear about its closure."

In the statement, the retailer opened with: "It's been a pleasure to create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience and be a part of this amazing community. Your support and loyalty have meant the world to us, and we are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you who walked through our doors.”

It added that its new focus, and seemingly one of the motives behind closing the store-is the further development of the company’s core brand. The announcement continued: "Our focus will be solely on Garms Affiliated and the brand we believe it can become.”

Garms also announced a closing sale, which will start this weekend, stating: "As we close, we would like to invite you to visit us one last time, take advantage of our closing sales starting this weekend, and allow us to personally thank you for all the love and support over the years.”
