Pizza is the top takeaway in the North East, bucking trend of the national favourite

Gone are the days of the Friday night fish and chip supper being the go to takeaway for Brits, a new study has revealed that residents in the North East prefer a pizza instead.

A new  study by mobile and tech retailer Currys surveyed 2,000 UK residents to discover the nation’s favourite takeaway food, and in the North East Pizza takeaway topped the list with 53% of those in this region putting this in their top three, only one of two UK regions to not crown Chinese takeaway the top of the takeouts.

This was followed closely by the national favourite, Chinese takeaway, with 52% putting it in their top three and then the Friday night British staple, fish and chips in third place, with just over a third (34%) of those in the North East putting this in their top three.

When it came to how much people are spending per person per month on takeaways, it was revealed that those in the North East are splashing the most cash on takeout in the country.

The average amount per person in the North East was found to be £51-£100 each month, which means they could be spending £612-£1200 per year on takeaways alone, with the majority (27%) of residents in this region ordering takeaway once a week.

But just because they’re spending the most, it doesn’t mean they are free of issues with takeaway delivery. When asked what the top issues they face with takeout were, two common problems topped the list, with 36% of North East residents bemoaning ‘late delivery’ and ‘missing or incorrect items’ as their top takeout woes.

The study also asked about the healthiness of takeaways in general, and although 72% of those in the North East never look at the calories of their takeout orders, 60% wish there were healthier takeaway options near them, while 52% are worried about the healthiness of their takeaway orders.

This worry doesn’t seem to be impacting consumption however, as the survey revealed that for the majority of those in the North East (39%) their takeaway consumption has remained the same over the past year, while for 26% it has even increased slightly.
