Taking place from 11am until 2pm, the full community is invited to come and take part in the festivities including live entertainment from the D-Day Darlings, free refreshments, games of bingo and displays from the Discovery Museum and Felling Heritage Centre.
The event all came together when 93-year-old George Larter from Heworth approached Age UK Gateshead and asked if they could put on a VE Day celebration.
He said: “It was important to me that we did something as a community to remember those that served and ultimately gave us our freedom.
“I remember the day so well, we had a big street party and during it, I was told that my dad who was a prisoner of war at the time, was coming home. So we made a big welcome home banner for him amongst all of the celebrations.
“There was so much excitement and joy, it’s a day I’ll never forget and I’d like to thank Kate from Age UK Gateshead for all of the work she’s put into the full event.”
Gateshead Mayor Kathleen McCartney will also be making a speech and joining in with the festivities.
Kate Wildish, Senior Community Development Worker at Age UK Gateshead, said: “As soon as George came to us with the idea and told me about his experience, I knew that so many of our residents and attendees would share that same passion and want to celebrate such a historic event.
“We approached Trinity Square and were delighted when they agreed to partner with us to put on a traditional street party for the full community to enjoy. We can’t wait to line the tables up in the town centre and get the party started!
“We’re asking residents to get in touch with Age UK Gateshead by phone or email to reserve a place so that we can make sure we have enough space for everyone to come and celebrate.”
