Wallsend Gym Helping Local Students Kickstart Careers in Personal Training

North East-based gym chain OneGym has strengthened its commitment to developing the next generation of aspiring personal trainers by joining forces with TyneMet College.

The initiative provides students on the Active IQ Level 3 Fitness Diploma with hands-on industry experience, equipping them with the skills required to succeed in the competitive health and fitness sector.

As part of their work experience, students gain practical exposure to gym operations, client interaction, and class instruction at OneGym’s Wallsend site, complementing their academic learning in anatomy, nutrition, and business development.

The programme, which has already seen students actively engaging in gym inductions and live training sessions, aims to bridge the gap between education and real-world employment.

Dave Challenger, Programme Lead at TyneMet College, said, "Our goal is to ensure students are not only qualified but also fully prepared to step into the fitness industry with confidence. Working with OneGym allows them to experience firsthand what it takes to work in a fast-paced, client-focused environment. By the time they complete their course, they will have the practical knowledge and skills to start their careers successfully."

Joe McCartney, Manager at OneGym Wallsend added, "At OneGym, we are passionate about supporting young talent and strengthening links within the community. This initiative provides students with a unique opportunity to gain experience in a real gym setting, ensuring they are ready to take the next step in their careers. We are proud to play a role in shaping the future of personal training in the North East."

For students like Millie, the experience has already proven invaluable. She said, "This has been the best gym we’ve visited. The staff have been really supportive, showing us around and helping us with the equipment. It’s given me a much better understanding of what it’s like to work in a gym."

With OneGym’s continued expansion across the region, the collaboration is set to provide further opportunities for students to gain industry experience and enhance their employability in the fitness sector.
