Billed as a “hug-in-a-mug of a play,” Remythed reimagines famous and forgotten myths and legends from a queer perspective, telling stories that are both ancient and deeply personal. From Sheherazade to Lady Godiva, five performers bring to life more than 30 characters while blending their own lived experiences with ancient tales.
After successful runs at VAULT Festival, Edinburgh Fringe and London’s Omnibus Theatre, Remythed has been hailed by The Guardian as “full of poise, careful choreography and captivating storytelling” ★★★★. Now, it’s bringing its uplifting message of joy, identity and community to Newcastle audiences.
The production is created and performed by Bet’n Lev Theatre, a queer-led company founded by Joel Samuels and Roann Hassani McCloskey. Their mission is to centre global majority and LGBTQIA+ voices through bold and accessible theatre.
Artistic Directors Joel Samuels and Roann Hassani McCloskey said: “When we sat down in mid-2022 to discuss the original idea for this show over a shared plate of falafel, we knew we needed to tell queer, global majority stories infused with joy. Three years later, after an award-winning premiere, sell-out previews and a lovely run at the Edinburgh Fringe, we now get to bring those stories on a regional tour.
"This is a hug-in-mug of a play for everyone, but we are especially delighted to be reaching out to queer communities all over the country, to centre their lives onstage in a joyful, silly and moving show that we love to perform!"
The hour-long show is suitable for ages 14+ and is part of Live Theatre’s continued commitment to diverse and dynamic programming that reflects the voices of modern Britain.
