Warrenpoint GAA press notes

U14 girls win Div3 Féile

Cumann Pheadiar Naofa Féile camogie team that won Div3

Cumann Pheadair Naofa camogs win féile.

Captain for this special day was Sophie Keenan. In the first game the girls played Kilclief/Ben Dearg, which was a closely fought game, ending in a draw, CPN 1:0 Kilclief/Ben Dearg 0:3. Up next was Atticall, which saw the girls step up a gear, final score CPN 3:1 Atticall 1:0. The 3rd game, which took them into the final, saw some lovely camogie from the ‘point girls, with some great scores, final score CPN 1:5 Shamrocks 0:0.

The final started very tight, with Kilclief/Ben Dearg edging things slightly, and we went in at half time on equal scores. However, the second half showed a stronger and more determined Warrenpoint team who left everything on the field, final score 3:3 to 0:4. Every single girl on the panel played their heart out and truly deserved collecting the shield, no doubt the first of many titles to come for this great wee team.

Senior Footballers drop points at home to Kilcoo

Warrenpoint welcomed Kilcoo to Páirc Liam Uí Ír on a warm, sunny evening on Friday April 11. A strong start from Warrenpoint provided hope for the home fans and showed that the team had put the defeat to Clonduff a week earlier behind them.

Kilcoo kicked a couple of 2 pointers to bring themselves in to the game and the first half finishing with the home side up by one.

Two goals in quick succession, early in the second half opened up a lead for Kilcoo, which they didn’t relinquish. The ‘point men fought hard and battled to the end but Kilcoo held on for the win with a scoreline of 1:18 – 2:20.

There were plenty of positives for the team to take from this game and we all look forward to the next game against Loughinisland on Thursday evening.

Senior Hurlers win over Castlewellan

Castlewellan 0-12

Cumman Pheadair Naofa 1-15

The senior Hurlers opened their league campaign away to Castlewellan on Monday night a first half goal from Ronan Cunnnigham, who finished with 1-2, saw the blues hold a 1-7 to 0-6 lead at the break.

0-9 from John O’Kane & impressive senior league debuts from Oisin Gambold at corner back & Eoin McGivern at corner forward & the return of Ali Higgins with 0-3 was enough to see the visitors finish with a flourish for a six point win

Dad’s & Lads in full swing

Over the last few weeks the Dads & Lads and social Hurling has got off the ground. Both our former Hurlers & Footballers have dusted off their boots, checked their shin pads, gumshields & helmets still fit & have once again graced the training fields for the season ahead. There Hurlers are getting ready for the Naomh Olaf (Dublin) Blitz on Easter Saturday, whilst we eagerly await the Footballers foray onto the scene in the coming weeks.

U10 LGFA

Our U10 girls had a great morning at their first mini blitz of the year. With two strong teams, the girls played really well against hosts Burren and Clonduff in very evenly matched games. Thanks to Burren for hosting and to all the parents for their support. Keep up the hard work girls!

U14 ladies’

The U14 ladies welcomed Mayobridge to Milltown this evening. The match started well for both teams, each getting scores on the board early. By half time there wasn’t much between the two teams. Strong second half performances from both sides saw each trade goals and points but it was Mayobridge who came away the victors. Very proud of The ‘Point ladies who didn’t give up and gave it their all right up to the final whistle. Thanks to Mayobridge for a very sporting match.

Warrenpoint blues turn green

Cumann Pheadair Naofa was recently accepted onto the National Green Club Programme.

We are delighted to announce that our First Official Green Club Action will be the planting of 650 native Irish trees and hedge saplings around the grounds at Pairc Liam Ui ir, Moygannon.

This will restore some of the hedgerows and increase species diversity, and provide new habitats for wildlife.

And…Ardal Murray has volunteered to plant them all! We are so fortunate to have his experience, knowledge and enthusiasm. Having spent a season planting trees in Canada, he certainly is the best man for this job!

Pictures include- Gerry, Seamus, Ardal, Roisin and Paul on a site walk in Moygannon.

Also Katrina and Roisin at the orientation day in Croke Park with two other Down Green Club members. (Mayobridge and Carryduff).

Plans underway for Easter Disco

Once again we will be hosting a juvenile disco in the the Mary St. Hall on April 25.
